I was raised in rural Montana, Alaska, and Idaho. I completed high school in Unalaska, Alaska (that's in the middle of the Aleutian Chain of islands) and then attended the University of Alaska, Anchorage. After three years of school and without a clear idea of what I wanted to do, I joined the U.S. Navy for 4 years. After boot camp and several months of training as a Sonar Technician in San Diego, California I was stationed in Long Beach, California. I met my ship for the first time out in the Persian Gulf during the Persian Gulf War and had many other experiences around the Pacific Rim.
After four years of service, I mustered out of the military with my honerable discharge. My recruiter told me I would see the world, but, he didn't tell me that I would really be seeing the world's OCEANS...chuckle. As a newly commissioned ship we spent a lot of time at sea and visiting the Pacific Rim nations.
I returned to school at Washington State University in Pullman, Washington to finish my bachelor's degree in Anthropology, after years during the summers (and some falls) I worked on wildland fire crews and hotshot fire crews around the western United States.
After graduating, I went to work in Eastern Oregon as an 'archy tech' for BLM and Park Service, and, CRM companies.
